Gunther challenges Cody Rhodes after SmackDown contract dispute

Gunther confronted Cody Rhodes on Friday Night SmackDown after the two failed to finalize a contract for a title match at Clash in Italy. Rhodes prepared the ring himself while waiting for Gunther to appear. Gunther accused Rhodes of shifting focus away from the planned agreement and onto himself.

Paul Heyman had arranged the opportunity for Gunther to challenge for Rhodes’ Undisputed WWE Championship. Rhodes responded by inviting Gunther to the ring to sign the contract and confirmed he would accept a direct request. The exchange ended without an immediate agreement.

Royce Keys interrupted the segment and offered to sign the contract in Gunther’s place. SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis then scheduled a match between Gunther and Keys for later in the night. Gunther defeated Keys after Solo Sikoa attempted to interfere and Rhodes attacked Gunther following the bell.

Rhodes and Gunther remain scheduled to meet at Clash in Italy for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The outcome of that match will determine the next title holder.
