A house fire in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, on March 23, 2024, claimed the lives of Jessi Pierce, a 37-year-old reporter who covered the Minnesota Wild for NHL.com, and her three children: Hudson, 8; Cayden, 6; and Avery, 4.[1][2]
The White Bear Lake Fire Department stated on March 25, 2024, that preliminary investigative findings showed no evidence the fire was set intentionally, though the official cause remains under investigation with assistance from the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.[1][3]
"We are in the very early stages of the investigation, and our preliminary findings have not led to any evidence that the fire was set intentionally," the department's press release said. "The official cause and further information will be released once the investigation is complete."[1]
Bystanders reported seeing flames emerging from the roof of the single-family home early that Saturday morning. Pierce's husband, Mike Hinrichs, was out of town on a work trip at the time, according to reports.[1][2]
Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin, who has led the NHL franchise based in Saint Paul since December 2019, described Pierce as a "ray of sunshine."[2][4]
"Words just can’t express how devastated we all are," Guerin said. "But ... it doesn’t matter if you’re in the media, if you’re a player, if you’re in management, a coach, we are all in this together."[2]
Pierce had covered the Wild for NHL.com over 10 seasons, with her work also appearing in The Athletic, B1G Ice Hockey blog, Minnesota Hockey Journal and Massachusetts Hockey.[2][4]
