Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green attends U.S. men's flag football national team trials

Former Washington cornerback Darrell Green, who played in the NFL from 1983 to 2002, is participating in U.S. men's flag football national team trials this week at the USA Football National Team Training Center in Chula Vista, California. Green, 64, qualified through a digital combine organized by USA Football.[1][2]

USA Football senior director of high performance and national teams Callie Brownson said Green "qualified through our digital combine" and that "his testing results were impressive," warranting a closer look by coaches despite his age compared to other participants.[1]

Green was selected by the Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders) in the first round, 28th overall, of the 1983 NFL draft out of Texas A&M-Kingsville. He spent his entire 20-year career with the franchise, retiring after the 2002 season.[3][4]

During his career, Green recorded 54 interceptions, six of which he returned for touchdowns, and 1,202 combined tackles according to database records. He won Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXVI, earned seven Pro Bowl selections and two first-team All-Pro honors (1986, 1991). Green was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.[3][4]

Flag football is set to debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The U.S. men's team has dominated internationally, winning six of the last seven IFAF Flag World Championships dating back to 2010.[5][6]

Approximately 100 men and women athletes are competing in the trials for national team consideration. Among them are former WNBA player Loryn Goodwin and ex-Florida State guard O’Mariah Gordon. Successful trial performers could receive invitations to training camp next month ahead of potential selection for the 2026 IFAF Flag World Championships in Germany.[1]

Green said on USA Football's Instagram page: "I’m going to give it my best and I’ll walk away with my head up, either way."[1]
