Hurley booed by crowd after UConn routs Illinois
UConn coach Dan Hurley drew boos from the Indianapolis crowd as he stepped to the microphone following the Huskies' Final Four semifinal victory over Illinois on April 4, 2026. Hurley had just headbutted freshman Braylon Mullins after the player's interview with CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson, a gesture that recalled his earlier interaction with a referee. The jeers carried onto the CBS broadcast as Hurley began speaking.
"The start to the game and the finish to the game," Hurley said of Mullins, before pausing at the boos. "I don’t know what… are they booing? The headbutt? I don’t know what they’re booing." Hurley's intense style has elicited both criticism and praise from college basketball fans since he replaced Kevin Ollie before the 2018-19 season.
His lone losing record at UConn came in his debut year, a 16-17 mark, amid sanctions from the prior two seasons under Ollie. Hurley has since restored the program's national standing, reaching the title game for the third time in four years.
No coach has matched that pace recently: Roy Williams reached finals in consecutive years with North Carolina in 2016 and 2017; Brad Stevens took Butler there back-to-back in 2010 and 2011; Billy Donovan won with Florida in 2006 and 2007. Mike Krzyzewski's three appearances in four years for Duke spanned 1990 to 1992, with titles in 1991 and 1992. UConn faces Michigan in the championship on Monday night.
