Jay Bilas Says NIL Has Improved College Basketball Quality
ESPN broadcaster Jay Bilas stated that college basketball has reached its highest level of play in recent years because of name, image and likeness compensation. The 62-year-old analyst said players are staying in school longer and developing further before entering professional ranks. Bilas made the comments in an interview with Fox News Digital.
Bilas noted that players now receive compensation while continuing their education, a change he compared to opportunities available to musicians and actors in similar situations. He added that the new system has spread talent more evenly across programs and cited Indiana’s national championship as evidence that smaller programs can succeed under current rules.
The former Duke forward pointed out that players are gaining more years of eligibility at the college level than in previous eras. This extended service, he said, has raised the overall quality of competition on the court.
Bilas also addressed differences in how transfers are viewed for players versus coaches. He observed that coaches move between schools without similar criticism and called for consistent standards regarding contract obligations across the sport.
